International Week 2026 was made even more vibrant with the successful implementation of BINUS BIPA Culinary & Art Experience: Introducing Wedang Uwuh & Roti Buaya, an engaging cultural event held on May 11th, 2026, at the BINUS Square Hall of Residence. 

Organized by BINUS BIPA, the event welcomed 30 distinguished participants from partner universities, embassies, the Japan Foundation, and various international institutions. More than just a cultural showcase, the event served as a unique platform for cultural exchange, allowing international guests to experience Indonesia through its rich culinary traditions and living heritage. 

 

Discovering Indonesia Beyond the Classroom 

At BINUS BIPA, learning Indonesian is not limited to grammar, vocabulary, or classroom discussions. It is about understanding the heart of Indonesia—its people, traditions, values, and stories. The Culinary & Art Experience embodied this philosophy by introducing participants to two iconic elements of Indonesian culture: Wedang Uwuh and Roti Buaya. 

The cultural presentation was delivered by Dr. Maria Tamarina Prawati, S.Pd., M.A. Ed, a lecturer of Creative Digital English at BINUS University. Through her insightful and engaging session, participants learned about the historical and cultural significance of these traditional culinary treasures. 

Guests discovered how Wedang Uwuh, a traditional herbal drink originating from Yogyakarta, reflects Indonesia’s rich heritage of natural ingredients and wellness traditions. They also explored the fascinating story behind Roti Buaya, a symbolic bread traditionally featured in Betawi wedding ceremonies, representing loyalty, commitment, and enduring relationships. 

 

A Hands-On Cultural Adventure 

What made the event truly memorable was its interactive and immersive approach. 

Rather than simply listening to presentations, participants were invited to actively take part in the preparation of Wedang Uwuh. Guided by Dr. Arief Zulkarnain, SE., MM., CHE., CHIA, a BINUSian chef and lecturer of Hospitality & Management at BINUS University, guests experienced firsthand how traditional Indonesian ingredients are carefully combined to create the aromatic and comforting beverage. 

Laughter, curiosity, and excitement filled the room as participants touched, smelled, and mixed the various spices that give Wedang Uwuh its distinctive flavor and character. The cooking demonstration quickly transformed into a lively cultural workshop where everyone could contribute, ask questions, and share their impressions. 

The experience became even more delightful when participants were invited to taste Roti Buaya. For many international guests, it was their first encounter with this unique culinary symbol of Betawi culture. As they sampled the bread and learned about its meaning, conversations naturally emerged about traditions, ceremonies, and cultural values from different countries.

One of the highlights of the event was the warm interaction among participants from diverse backgrounds. Representatives from universities, embassies, and cultural institutions exchanged stories and perspectives while enjoying Indonesian culinary heritage together.
